Newborn Language : Babbling

<Newborn Language : Babbling> is the first series of the 'Newborn Language' project, conceived to propose a new form of language that befits the contemporary media and technological environment. It is a sound installation that utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) and spatial audio technology to capture the nascent stage of language as it enters a stereoscopic space.

Despite media and technology continuously evolving to transcend physical limitations, the language used within them remains trapped in archaic forms: 'writing' confined to a 2D plane or 'speech' stagnating at a single fixed point. The 'Newborn Language' project was initiated to break away from this inertia and bridge the lag between technology and culture by assigning a necessary form befitting the technology of future society, aiming to spark this shift as a cultural phenomenon. As the starting point, <Newborn Language : Babbling> focuses on the immature vocalization phenomena of an AI prior to establishing a complete linguistic system. Unlike its successor, 'New Language : Speech,' which demonstrates a fluent system derived from perfectly learning over 40 languages, this work concentrates on the imperfect and fragmented sounds emitted by an AI that has not yet undergone sufficient training. Resembling the babbling of an infant repeating meaningless sounds to acquire language, the rough and irregular signals generated by the AI float through space via a 6-channel spatial audio system, revealing the primal vitality of this fledgling language. Furthermore, by visualizing sound waveforms across two separated LED Matrix displays rather than a single integrated screen, the work sensuously conveys the transitional state and segmented structure of a language where grammar and system have not yet fully coalesced.

This implementation highlights the discrepancy where the vessel (media) holding technology has fundamentally changed, yet its content (language) has not escaped the inertia of the past, while metaphorically representing the moment of birth for a new mode of communication germinating amidst rapid technological advancement. By translating the clumsy process—wherein a machine learns culture and mimics human language in a stereoscopic form—into an artistic object, <Newborn Language : Babbling> suggests the potential possibilities of the stereoscopic and expanded new language to come.
