<Newborn Language : Speech> is a sound installation that utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) and spatial audio technology to multidimensionally redefine the auditory delivery of language, proposing a new linguistic form that befits the contemporary media and technological environment.
Despite media and technology continuously evolving to transcend physical limitations, the language used within them remains trapped in archaic forms: 'writing' confined to a 2D plane or 'speech' stagnating at a single fixed point. The project 'Newborn Language' was initiated to break away from the inertia of maintaining current linguistic forms and to bridge the lag between technology and culture by assigning a necessary form to language that befits the technology of contemporary and future society, aiming to spark this shift as a cultural phenomenon akin to a 'neologism' or a playful cultural movement. As part of this initiative, 'New Language : Speech' focuses on the speech sounds of this new language, implementing a new pronunciation system that deconstructs existing grammar using an AI TTS (Text-to-Speech) engine trained on over 40 languages. The 'speech' of this new language does not originate from a single point but is output through an 8-channel spatial audio system; here, sound functions beyond simple information transmission, forming meaning through every auditory variation allowed by the medium, such as direction, movement, velocity, and timbre. Furthermore, a Flexible LED Matrix display visualizes information such as sound waveforms and movement trajectories in real-time, sensuously proving the existence of this new 'writing' that floats beyond the flat plane.
This endeavor highlights the discrepancy where the vessel (media) holding technology has fundamentally changed, yet its content (language) has not escaped the inertia of the past. <Newborn Language : Speech> experiments with the possibilities of stereoscopic and expanded communication achievable when culture fully embraces technology, presenting a direction for language evolution that aligns with the contemporary media landscape.
