<ViViD>, an acronym for 'Visualizing Virus Diffusion,' is a sound-visual installation that translates the genetic data of a virus and its diffusion patterns into the sensory languages of sound and light.
This work is implemented based on the RNA data of COVID-19, which spread globally in 2020. The virus's unique genetic information is converted into auditory textures such as timbre and pitch via algorithms, while the 'diffusion' pattern of the virus spreading to hosts creates the trajectory and movement of sound across the space. These data-driven auditory signals spatially dominate the room through an 8-channel spatial audio system and are visually realized in combination with seven custom-made lighting fixtures designed to react in real-time, rendering the invisible flow of the virus perceptible.
This audiovisual implementation goes beyond mere data representation, embodying the social message revealed by the 2020 pandemic. The rapid spread of the virus served as a paradoxical catalyst that visualized the complex dynamics of the anthropocentric ecosystem and the hyper-connected society we inhabit more clearly than ever before. By transforming the diffusion process of the virus into artistic data, 'ViViD' allows us to sensuously reaffirm the invisible links that sustain our society.
This project was produced as part of the specialized [music and sound art program] at Mullae Art Space.
