Liminal Future

The 2024 Contemporary Art Exhibition 'Pitching' is a visual arts initiative centered on exhibitions, criticism, and workshops, serving as a mediator between artists, curators, critics, and audiences. Based on contemporary discourse, this year’s exhibition features artworks that reflect the present moment under the theme of ‘Posthumanism.’ Encompassing keywords such as post-anthropocentrism, AI, the environment, and the Anthropocene, Posthumanism represents both the urgent issues we face today and the task of seeking better directions through diverse solutions.

In the exhibition title, ’Liminal Future’,(Rosy Future: Ambiguous Boundaries) the phrase 'Rosy Future' is typically used as an idiom predicting a bright and hopeful outlook. However, in this exhibition, it metaphorically draws on the various attributes of a rose; it implies not only a transition toward an optimistic future but also unpredictable situations where elements fail to fuse or are cast aside without respect. Embracing openness and hybridity, it moves in multiple directions, seeking expansion by repeatedly deconstructing and reconstructing boundaries through various intersections and complements.

The eight artists selected for this exhibition—Kang Juri, Kim Donghyung, Kim Inhye, Kim Jaeik, Dool, Ahn Gwanghwi, Ahn Sangbeom, and Ahn Jinyoung—attempt diverse forms of interaction through painting, installation, and media art to depict their own 'Rosy Future.' These artists re-contextualize subjects with an attitude of fusion and expansion at the ambiguous boundary between the present and the future. This approach combines with the inherent properties of each medium to operate as a contemporary visual art methodology.
